THE HYENA AND THE CALF

The Hyena’s Prayer

In a time long ago, a drought plagued the land where a hungry hyena resided. Famine cast its cruel shadow, leaving the hyena desperate and famished. In its desperation, the hyena turned to prayer, beseeching God for sustenance. With fervent words, it implored, “Oh God, in my dire hunger, grant me something to devour.”

Having uttered its plea, the hyena ventured into the vast bush, its keen eyes scanning for a glimmer of hope. And lo, amidst the dry expanse, a sight unfolded before the hyena—an innocent calf tethered by a rope.

Ecstasy engulfed the hyena as it marveled, thinking, “Although God provides, this time it was not by His hand that I was granted sustenance.” Emboldened by pride, the hyena crept closer to the captive calf, its jaws gnawing at the binding rope. With each chew, the rope weakened until it finally gave way. Freed from its restraints, the calf darted away, leaving the hyena empty-handed, its hunger unsatisfied.

This tale imparts a profound truth—God bestows upon us that which we ask for. The hyena prayed for food, and it was granted. Yet, its pride overshadowed the divine provision, leading it to deny God’s hand in its nourishment. As a consequence of its hubris, the calf was snatched away, a stark reminder of the consequences of arrogance. We must never boast about the blessings bestowed upon us by God, for if we succumb to pride, He may swiftly revoke His gifts. Instead, let gratitude fill our hearts, acknowledging the generosity of the Divine.
