NJAGOMBE AND THE DRAGON

The Dragon’s Bride

In the depths of time, a fearsome dragon ruled the slopes of the enigmatic mountain, Kirinyaga, its insatiable hunger driving it to devour innocent villagers. This perilous creature hid in the water by day, emerging under the cover of night to feast upon the helpless. Families would tremble in sorrow as they witnessed the annihilation of entire households, paralyzed by their own overwhelming fear. They felt powerless to defend themselves, trapped in the grip of terror. But they soon realized that there was only one path to survival.

Summoning their collective wisdom, the village elders convened a meeting and made a grave proclamation: each family would sacrifice one of their daughters to be offered as sustenance to the dragon. It was a desperate attempt to appease the beast and secure another day of existence. Thus, every evening, before the sun dipped below the mountain’s peak, families would bind a girl to a tree, waiting for the perilous dragon to emerge from the depths of the water and claim its macabre meal.

Meanwhile, in a distant land, a brave soul named Njang’ombe had resolved that the time had come for him to seek a bride. With a firm conviction, he set his sights on finding a woman from the slopes of Kirinyaga. Informing his family of his intentions, he embarked on a courageous adventure that would test his mettle. Days turned into months as he pressed onward, traversing uncharted territories in pursuit of the mountain of radiant beauty. As doubts flickered in his mind, a cluster of huts caught his attention in the distance. His heart surged with hope as he quickened his pace, realizing he had stumbled upon a village!

Njang’ombe arrived at the village, eagerly seeking the chief to introduce himself and declare his purpose. Warmly welcomed, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was amiss. As he meandered through the village, he crossed paths with a captivating young woman, sitting with her gaze fixed upon the mountain. Intrigued, he approached her cautiously and inquired about her name.

Clear and steady, her voice rang out, “I am Waturi.”

Njang’ombe introduced himself, discovering that she was the chief’s daughter. Their conversation blossomed into laughter as he regaled her with tales of his intrepid journeys across diverse lands, recounting stories of varied clans, exotic wildlife, and tantalizing fruits. The noon sun began its descent, casting elongated shadows as the evening approached. Njang’ombe observed a deep sadness veiling Waturi’s countenance as she turned her gaze skyward.

“What troubles you, Waturi?” Njang’ombe questioned, his curiosity piqued.

A sigh escaped her lips, her voice tinged with melancholy. “My time has come. Tonight, I must bid my family farewell.”

Puzzled, Njang’ombe probed further, and Waturi patiently shared the grim reality that awaited her—a sacrificial offering to the dragon, ensuring her family’s survival for yet another day. Doubts clouded Njang’ombe’s mind, but with newfound determination, he devised a plan: “Tonight, when the dragon comes, I shall slay it.”

Waturi, unsure of his combat prowess, agreed, despite her reservations. The sun began its descent, casting a golden hue upon the land, and Waturi was bound and left at the village’s entrance. The distant cries of her grieving mother filled the air. Contemplating her life, Waturi wondered if there could have been more she could have accomplished.

As the last rays of sunlight caressed her skin, the moon’s silvery light bathed the land. The air grew charged, rising and falling, and from the still, dark waters of Kirinyaga’s hidden lake, a menacing snout and gleaming teeth emerged. The formidable creature broke free from its aqueous shackles, revealing a visage that struck fear into the hearts of mortals. With bared jowls, showcasing rows of razor-sharp teeth, the dragon drew a deep breath and launched itself skyward from the water’s surface.

When the time came for the dragon to emerge, the lady trembled, her fear threatening to consume her. Yet, it did not deter the dragon’s arrival. As it materialized, she awakened Njang’ombe from his slumber. The dragon’s fiery gaze fixated upon him, marking him as its primary target. Njang’ombe wielded his knife, striking at the dragon’s head. But with each head severed, the beast sprouted another, displaying its indomitable power. Undeterred, Njang’ombe persisted, hacking away until only one head remained. Weakened and vulnerable, the dragon relinquished its final head, returning to the water’s embrace, succumbing to its demise.

Njang’ombe’s hand had swollen from the fierce battle, the knife wedged within his grasp. Waturi, the lady rescued from the dragon’s clutches, tended to his wounded hand, soothing it with warm water and administering first aid.

The next morning, a young boy, on his way to the latrine, stumbled upon scattered remains of the creature at the spot where Waturi had been bound. Filled with terror, he raced back, his screams echoing through the village, beckoning curious onlookers. As was customary, a crowd flocked to the source of the commotion, discovering the lifeless body of the once-ferocious dragon.

A gathering was called to determine the identity of the dragon slayer. Village boys claimed credit for the feat, but the villagers harbored doubts and insisted that the true hero step forward. Njang’ombe volunteered, and as he emerged, their doubts evaporated. Recognizing his valor, the grateful villagers decided that each family would contribute a cow to express their gratitude to Njang’ombe, the savior who had delivered them from the clutches of the monstrous menace. The father of the woman Njang’ombe had sought also offered his daughter’s hand in marriage, a free gift for the gallant warrior. Laden with cattle and accompanied by his newfound wife, Njang’ombe ventured to distant lands, leaving his wife behind to tend to their bountiful herd.

Arriving in a new realm, Njang’ombe discovered a community plagued by insecurity—a colossal snake terrorizing its inhabitants. Once again, he brandished his trusty blade and vanquished the serpent, earning him yet another beautiful wife as a reward. With his growing wealth and two wives, Njang’ombe returned to his ancestral home, where he reunited with his parents, his courageous exploits etching his name in the annals of legend.
